AN IDLE BRAIN CAN BE A CREATIVE WORKSHOP

AN IDLE BRAIN CAN BE A CREATIVE WORKSHOP
By Nagesh SE

What is an idle brain? Our old saying says that an idle brain is a devil’s workshop. Is it true? Is idle brain necessarily be devil’s workshop? First let us try to define what the idle brain is in the context of the above old saying.

Can anybody’s brain remain idle i.e. without doing any work? Simply can’t as we all know why. Considering the different works performed by our mind we can say that an idle brain is one which is not seriously focusing on any particular problem or issue. That means while we are idle, we are not immersed in serious thoughts and are free to invite different ideas on any activity without getting psychologically disturbed. If we are satisfied with this definition we go forward to our subject as to how an idle brain can be a creative workshop.

The development of arts and literature can be traced from the history of human development. The primitive man when he was busy in search of food did not have any time left for thinking. With the little time left for thinking, he was able get the idea to sharpen his tools and got more leisure time than earlier as he was able to hunt food in less time and in more quantity. This leisure time resulted in his artistic expression of his thoughts, his fear of nature, hatred towards cruel animals etc. Later on many inventions were carried out by human beings who dedicatedly spent their time thinking about things which others couldn’t manage to think.

The first thing to be recognized is that if one is struggling to get food and other basic necessities and can’t make to get any leisure time, that person can’t be expected to come out with any innovative ideas. Even though it is true that many rulers enjoyed the wealth created by many peasants and workers, they did contribute to the development of culture, arts and science by supporting the persons to satisfy their hobbies.

Many poets , writers, sculptures , scientific inventions, massive miraculous constructions took place during the kings period which clearly states the power of people’s creativeness if given an opportunity to enjoy leisure time.

It is not to tell that only few people can be creative and others can’t. It is quite opposite to that. Anybody can be creative if given an opportunity. Opportunity in the form of circumstances & education is required to come out with creative ideas. Our education, our value system, our socio-political system should be based on this concept so that “An idle brain (as defined above) can be a creative workshop”.
